An awesome lego set, I got it for my almost 5 y-old who adores volcanoes, and he couldn't be more thrilled. The volcano is great and does take some building. The instructions are very clear and he managed to build the whole thing almost on his own. He does have good motor skill and can be very focused when interested, but still, he's not 5 yet. The instructions are extremely well made, with close-ups and 1:1 size guides to check you picked the right piece. Thumbs up !!
Love this set, most parts are great; truck, trailer and the volcano are all excellent. I love the details on the trailer like the crowbar and instruments. It has everything you need to collect, move, break open your boulders and then have your scientist study the contents. So the play value if it's your only volcano explorer set is very good. As I've found the other sets do add to the fun though! The volcano is rather large, but a doddle to assemble thanks to the colour coding going on inside it. A couple of minor things though, the dumper isn't great, a seat wouldnt have hurt and again the repetition of minifigure heads.
This is another great set in the LEGO City line that allows kids to imagine, and play out whatever sort of explorer adventures they want to.
Buying the Volcano Exploration base at full price, you are getting a really fun set. It is a little expensive in terms of the cost per brick, but most City sets are. It is also pricey in terms of the build time that you get, but the end product is so much fun that kids will probably get a lot of play time out of it (at least I would have, but I was always into science). The Minifigures that come in this set rock. I just wish that LEGO had put a little more detail into that trailer.

With everything taken into account, this offers a satisfying build that's better for play than display. Whether it's good value or not will depend on how offensive the individual builder finds using eight big rock pieces to erect the volcano.
There's a lot in it. It's a great set for kids that's packed with playability features but it might not be so appealing to AFOLs due to a disappointing mobile base and volcano.
