My favorite part of the train has to be the flatbed wagon with its rotating tree feature. The locomotive is decent and it looks very festive. I do like the detailing on the smoke coming out from the smokestack as it is simple but effective. The other two cars of the Winter Village Train isn't as cool in my opinion but they do add to the train as a whole. I do appreciate that you can add Power Functions to it and to not include it with the set brings the price down to what we're used to seeing for these Winter Village sets.
It's a great addition to the Winter Village series in my view. There are a lot of features, a lot of interesting and colourful parts, and the build is fun to do. One more carriage would have been a nice addition but other than that and the few design points noted throughout, the set is a great build and the adaptability to Power Functions is quick and easily done in a few minutes. Of course if you are more traditional and wish to push the set around yourself, it also works well for that.
Is it the best Winter Village set? No, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the more charming and memorable LEGO sets from 2016.
This is a delightful set, with some nice techniques and a generally well put together, if not too remarkable, train. The platform and track would have been better removed to allow for a bigger train or more accessible price point, but it's still a perfectly acceptable addition to the Winter Village collection.
I recommend picking up the 10254 Winter Holiday Train. It is a good, solid set and a great addition to your collection, whether it's going to remain on display in a Holiday Village or be incorporated into a collection. It's a nice update, with better design, and different benefits for 2016.
The set is rated 12+ and is part of the LEGO Creator Expert line but it is actually a very straightforward build with no new techniques or difficult build portions. I can say this with some authority as I followed the retail description: “Gather the family for some festive LEGO building fun with this charming model…" and built this with my only 12+ family member, my very novice LEGO building partner.
This LEGO Christmas train is a marvel in looks. It's not as realistic as the LEGO City Trains, but it fits with the whimsical, storybook look of the LEGO Winter Village sets. This set is fairly simple to put together and thus, it's perfect for a family build. In the tradition of the Winter Village sets, it comes with a full Christmas theme, including a rotating Christmas tree, presents and buildable mini-toys. This makes this one a very fun set to play with.
10254 Winter Holiday Train is fairly impressive on the whole but it does not match the high standard set by many of the other Winter Village models in my opinion. The bright colour scheme is very appealing and I love the selection of tiny toys included but the design of the train offers relatively little innovation.
Overall it's a nice set. There are fun little details and it looks great in the village. Definitely a display set. The build itself was less thrilling. No clever building techniques or surprises. Just straight forward one brick on another. So should you get it? If you love the holidays this is a great set for around the Christmas tree. But for the build I would suggested something more challenging.
