Ok, I moaned about the monotony of building so many seats, and I could criticise a Number 9 bus going to Brickston via Yellow Brick Road, Brickadilly Circus and Twobytwo Square when we all know you want the 159 via New Brick Street. But it has to be said – LEGO's 10258 London Bus set is worth the £104.99 I paid (after the Lego VIP reward I hold), because it is so handsome.
After visiting London a couple years ago, this set kept calling me, and I finally decided to pick it up. I'm glad I did; it's a pretty nice set. I'd definitely prefer moving away from stickers to printed specialty parts for multiple reasons - and this set is fairly heavy with the use of stickers - but they are good quality and look nice when applied properly. I just don't like that messing up a sticker can take away from the final product... Not a big deal to me stopping to take a couple extra minutes- but a potential serious issue for younger builders and even adults with even the slightest dexterity or vision issues, etc.
I love expert-level Lego's and this is a great set. There are no numbered bags, so all pieces must be sorted before starting, but it's got easy to follow instructions, and the finished piece is fantastic.
This is a worthy addition to the LEGO Creator Expert range in a build that has been beautifully thought out. I would strongly recommend this set for collectors of the range as it makes for a great display set, and I'm certain that there is also a wider appeal to bus enthusiasts who have a fondness for this great icon.
Having built and owned a fair few LEGO sets over the years, the more I sit looking at this set the more I admire the design and story which has been poured into it. In fact I'd even go as far as to say it's one of my favourite sets in recent years. A true icon of London has now become a iconic LEGO set. Although it's not an overly complicated build and there are a few repetitive steps, mainly in the seats, it's great fun to build. Partly down to how the sections all fall into place and provide the details you'd associate with the real world bus. Despite the use of stickers, all of these graphic elements of the set offer plenty of characters, from the British love of biscuits to the play on place names such as Brickston and Brickadilly Circus. The London Bus is a must have for LEGO fans of all ages and will certainly be one of the sets that remain on display long after it has been built.
The Creator Expert range represents the pinnacle of current LEGO design and I think 10258 London Bus is a worthy addition to the line. The subject is undoubtedly iconic and it has been rendered very effectively in LEGO form, using some unusual or even entirely new building techniques as well as many rare pieces. I love the shaping of the model, particularly towards the rear where the attractive curves have been perfectly replicated and the attention to detail is thoroughly impressive throughout.
