The LEGO Art sets will be perfect for display in your home gallery. Even the instructions have a coffee table book quality to them. We didn't really mind it taking so long because the whole experience was actually quite relaxing. If you're an art lover and a LEGO fan, you'll really enjoy building a work of art using traditional LEGO bricks and circular pieces.
The pricing is a tad high, even more so should you wish to build and display all three images or the combined image. But the large brick plates carry the higher costs, as most large elements often do. The price is the sets biggest obstacle, it may put off the average customer, who is interested in giving it a try and may frustrate AFOLs who must build them all. The ‘soundtrack' was interesting to listen to, but it felt a little generic and disconnected to the build and the subject matter in place. Once it got around to talking to the set designers it was certainly more interesting. But I enjoyed the build and quite like the finished product.
31199 Marvel Studios Iron Man offers surprising variation between its three designs, despite their shared colour scheme and focus upon metallic surfaces. The different shading methods are remarkably successful and I am particularly delighted with the MK III armour that appears faithful to its onscreen counterpart. The tan reflections across the centre look wonderful.
The LEGO Art line set out to capture a new segment of the LEGO audience, and it succeeds admirably. There are many who will find the set's simple techniques yet impressive results a very satisfying experience, and it's sure to open the doors for newcomers to the LEGO hobby, and that's always a good thing. The Art theme's pop culture expressions are an instant hook into the wallets of modern nerddom, and there's no denying that the stylized portraits are cool. However, along the way, some of the joys of traditional LEGO building are lost. It's so simple that to call the experience a “LEGO build" seems almost disingenuous, and if you're looking for excitement with the process rather than simply joy at the results, this probably isn't the set for you. The price is also a bit hard to swallow.
It's unusual to suggest that a LEGO set made up of only thousands of 1×1 rounded plates or tiles could be worth over £100, but, through a keen understanding of its audience, the LEGO Group's venture into uncharted adult territory is fully justified, as is that price tag.
