This is a really awesome Lego set for advanced builders. It was very impressive when built and includes several nifty features. The only complaint is that the instructions for the 2nd builds (i.e. the 2nd of the 2-in-1) are only found online instead of being printed out in the box.
Its a rare thing to see a hovercraft model in any form nowadays so I was excited to get my hands on this set. The set is a good size and represents a cargo hovercraft with flat deck for loading items on. I was really impressed by how good the technical functions are on the set. I was not expecting the propellers to spin and the shafts to turn as it is pushed along the ground. This is a great feature from a play experience perspective as it brings the hovercraft alive as its pushed around. The gearing for these functions made the build more interesting and exciting to see how it all works together at the end. The ramp which can be raised and lowered to load / unload the truck works well and also adds to the experience. If I had one little niggle with the set it would be the corners of the skirts have large holes when looking at it from above. This is not a massive deal but it would have been nice to see these partially filled in somehow. All in all a great set especially for a hovercraft fan like me.
For what it is supposed to be, this set is doing great! Good: Interesting machine. Lots of (simple) functions. Strong lower bodywork. Nice overall look. Bad: Propellers do wiggle left/right a lot, when you operate them by pushing the Hovercraft, Needs a fair amount of cranking to get the ramp up/down. Crane does not have enough space to work properly. Hollow body.
On the whole, the Hovercraft is good, but not great. The primary design elements of this model provide the play features that I would expect and want from such a model. I love the spinning rotors, the front ramp, and the cool pilot house. The service truck complements the hovercraft quite well. However, the model has some significant blemishes too. The crane and cargo box interactions seems like a great idea with mediocre implementation. Quite frankly, the deck features on the hovercraft are simply flimsy, definitely not at the same level of stability I've come to expect from Technic models. This model wobbles in weird places more than most of the other kits I've recently put together.
