Monster Jam trucks are pretty detailed vehicles, and pulling them off in Technic, at this scale, is tough. When you factor in the pullback feature, the durability required, the budget for this set, I think Lego did about as good of a job as could be expected. It's certainly an interesting looking vehicle, and more cohesive than many of the nonsense pullback sets in the past.

42119 Monster Jam Max-D brings a great first experience of monster trucks from the Monster Jam series to LEGO Technic, at a scale that offers enough for younger and older fans alike. It also gets the creative juices flowing (particularly after watching the real-life monster trucks in action) as to what could be possible moving forward, if this was a line to be revisited or re-scaled.

As with the sets I reviewed last year, the pullback motors add easy, fun playability to a small model. The monster truck form factor is a good pair with the pullback functionality; it's sturdy, large, and quite satisfying to both push around manually or race with the motor. The pullback motor adds an additional play mechanism that isn't present in more static vehicles, but the lack of any working suspension is quite disappointing.

These two little sets are proper, hands-on fun. You aren't abstracted away from the experience by having to constantly look at a phone screen. There's no batteries to worry about, no apps nor wires. No firmware updates, no Bluetooth, no connectivity issues...
