If you're even remotely a fan of Ghostbusters, or just good Lego in general, you should absolutely go get this set. Probably two, because you're going to MOC up one to fix those little gaps. Okay, maybe three, because you're also going to want to keep one at work to display as well. Maybe even four…
This set does a great job of recreating the vehicle and characters from the movie. Fans can reenact scenes from the movie or display the set in a Ghostbusters collection.
This is a model that screams quality. It probably wasn't subject to the same cost constraints that may have hobbled the (cheaper, worse) DeLorean; and I'm glad that a lesson may have been learned. Collectors will pay for quality, and this is very much a display set; one to perch proudly on your mantelpiece and await the ‘wow's from visitors. Or pose it atop your television and sit back to enjoy the film…It's better value in the US ($50) but even in Europe, it's worth the price of admission.
I was really looking forward to this set when I heard about it! Now after building it I can only tell you about how much i love it. If you are thinking about purchasing the Ecto-1, go ahead! you will have no regrets. One thing I personally think is a great inclusion to this set is the stand for the minifigures. I collect minifigures my self and always think it is a hassle to have to build your own display stand for them especially if you have an insufficient amount of bricks left. The stand is very suitable, I love the Ghostbusters Logo on the front and the yellow and black stripes. The minifigures themselves are very unique and very detailed. One feature I think LEGO could have done better is to change Venkman and Zeddemore's hair to the one in the Ghostbusters Firehouse set. To the main part of the set... THE ECTO-1 The car itself is very detailed and precise. Not too many new or clever building techniques just very ordinary which also makes it a very easy build. Proportions are very good and the 'high tech' features on the roof are very film accurate. I would recommend this to every LEGO and/or Ghostbusters fans
To wrap up, this is a fantastic set – one of my favourites so far. It gets 9.5 out of 10 neutrino wands. I'd change the use of the whips, and that would be it! It's got some great playability, looks brilliant on a shelf, and the minifigures are second to none – honestly the best ones I have seen in a set to date. If you do see it in stores (it's there, I saw some recently), it's one to purchase.
Fun and fairly simple lego set. It was just a little tricky, at times, to tell what color of otherwise identical pieces to use but you can look at the box for help. The finished product is pretty small (you can scale it off of the LEGO people) but looks great - I keep it on my desk as a fun piece of decor. It comes with a sort of stand to display the 4 people (proton packs and all) but, if you want to put the people in the car, there isn't really room for the proton packs (I put one inside the car and attached the other 2 to the outside of the car b/c that's the only way I could fit them) and one of the 4 people will have to ride on the outside of the car (holding on to the ladder). The set took me (an adult) just over an hour to build.
One downside I see is that the Ecto-1 is small and cannot fit all the minifigures but other than that, I don't see any other faults. If everyone had fit in the car, then the design would have gotten 5 stars below. Another nice feature is everything is on printed bricks and not stickers. I know that many of us dislike stickers and don't want to put on the logos off-centered.
Ecto-1 is not cheap, but it has a lot going for it. The car is on par with models built by some of the best adult builders and the minifigs look good. I think the vehicle is very large compared to the figures and to other LEGO vehicles purportedly intended for minifigs.
It's the perfect size for a build in one sitting and when it all comes together, the sense of satisfaction that it evoked in me was quite rare. For those of you keeping score at home, I highly recommend picking this set up.
I have no doubt this will be a popular set among AFOLs. It is definitely a step up from the previous Cuusoo BTTF set. As for its appeal to younger builders, I'm not sure. My kids have never heard of the Ghostbusters and weren't very interested in this set.
This is far and away my favourite Cuusoo/LEGO Ideas set to date. While I was a little disappointed at how the DeLorean came out and fairly ambivalent about the other previous Cuusoo releases, I have no such reservations about this set which I think is excellent. It's a fun build, ECTO-1 is robust and well-realised with tons of detail, the minifigures are great, and love and attention have clearly been lavished on the content of the instruction booklet, with only the binding of the booklet causing me concern.
This is an absolute corker of a set. I'm no fan of cars on the whole, but this is one beautiful vehicle. It's packed with great new elements, a constantly varying build and surprising techniques that I imagine many 10 year-olds could find challenging. But let's face it, this set has been largely aimed at the adult market. Even non-AFOLs are shrieking "Shut up and take my money."
