This is my first modular building, so I can't really compare it to any of the nine that came before it, but on its own it's great in my opinion. In fact, it made me want to start collecting this series. I would recommend anyone to add this to their collection right away, whether you already have the other modular buildings or are a newcomer to this line like me, especially if you are a fan of mysteries.
I don't usually review sets even though we're huge Lego consumers/fans here but I had to on the Detective set. It is so incredibly packed with functions like hidden doors/compartments etc it is amazing. Plus, no stickers! And the mirror!? Are you kidding me!? That one really blew us away. Lots and lots of rare bricks here too. Bravo Lego! The designers really knocked it out of the park with this one. The story is very cute too and easily modifiable to whatever story you choose.
My 10-year-old son wanted this for Christmas. We were concerned with the "16+" age rating, but he knocked it out in less than three days. I have to admit, it is a very cool Lego set, with lots of details inside and outside the building. Now, of course, he wants another Creator Expert set to continue the "neighborhood". Given the cost of these sets, this is the one word of caution to other parents... if you give a mouse a cookie... My son loves to give "tours" of the project to any relative willing to listen.
One of the best modulars yet, but perhaps not the best. Although it's a must-have for all modular building aficionados who are unlikely to be disappointed with it, if you don't have any of the previous ones yet I think I'd buy the Parisian Restaurant ahead of this.
There's a more varied colour scheme than usual, which looks fantastic. One advantage of Modulars is that they're an opportunity for the designer to deliver us a lot of basic bricks in a less common colour, like the Olive Green in last year's 10243 Parisian Restaurant, so the downside to having more colours in Detective's Office is that there's no real 'bulk' of any colour - but don't fret, there's still some new parts in a rarer hue.
So what's my final verdict? I'm seriously considering getting another modular building!
While the Detective's Office looks pretty cool with the split building, I found it difficult to get my hands inside to move things around or fix things. I'm not sure if I preferred the Parisian Restaurant over this set. I like the look of the Detective's Office more, but probably prefer the Parisian Restaurant for playability.
Part 1 of the review. I really like the look of the detective's desk. It's cluttered, sure, but it looks classy.
