My grandson loves it! It arrived well before his birthday and in great shape. He loves taking everything apart and putting it back together. Then he plays, acting out the Cars movie.
This was a fun kit to build with my not quite four year old grandson (who is graduating from Duplos to Legos.) There are 116 pieces in the kit, so at his age, it was a bit of a challenge. It should be a fairly easy build for older children. I'm new to the Juniors line but I really like it as a transition style set for young children. A number of pieces are already molded together rather than little tiny blocks that I expect from regular Legos. The kit contains a smiling Lightning McQueen, Smokey and Junior Moon. The setting is Smokey's Garage with a small storefront. There is also a raised car ramp, a crane that moves, a tool kit on wheels and some spare tires and various tools. My grandson really likes the crane as he likes to lift the characters (you have to hold the crane down when pretending to lift.) It is a kit that has a lot to play with and a lot of imagination possibilities.
I put it together for my 3 year old. He loves it and it's easy for him to fix if one breaks apart. Lots for them to play with. We just put it together and he's been playing with it for an hour straight. Well worth the money.
This set will encourage open-ended narrative based play so whether McQueen is there for an oil change, or gearing up for a race, there are endless possibilities to the stories that can be created. Disney Pixar fans can use this set in addition to other sets in the line to build out their own Cars inspired world. We especially think kids will love using the crane to tow McQueen in addition to pushing him through the garage.
I cannot review this set from the perspective of its target builder, but who I can imagine will love driving Lightning McQueen across many a surface. However, from the perspective of someone who enjoys smaller, hand-held MOCs and printed parts, there's certain appeal in these sets. It may not be enough to justify the £20 price quite as much as someone of the target age for this set, but, it should at least have you taking a second look at it.
