Minecraft revolves around building whatever you want, and the LEGO bricks in this set can be used to create unique Minecraft structures. The directions also include a Rebuild Inspiration section that shows you how to modify the farm with s few simple changes.
My daughter is really into Minecraft and saved up her money for the LEGO Minecraft "The Farm" set. She is 8 and has really been into LEGO Friends, and was very excited to get this set. The set comes with a detailed booklet for constructing the set, and she had no problem assembling everything without help. Her favorite part is the animals (cow and sheep). When assembled, there is a pen for the animals with a movable gate. There are a variety of features to the assembled set - a farm, water, tree, torches, pen for the animals, etc. It also comes with a Steve, Skeleton, and a pumpkin. Overall, this is a nice set and my kids both play with the assembled set.
I'm not qualified to comment how effectively this set replicates the Minecraft experience, and if like me you do not play the game then you'll not be buying this for the build or play experience. I'm very happy to have the set though; it's great having these strange new cube pieces to play with and the quantity of Medium Nougat is very welcome. Sure, many parts are very basic but is that so much of a problem? Large plates and 2x bricks are really useful. It all comes down to the price I guess, and of course The Farm has a very hefty price tag if you compare it to basic sets like the Bricks & More theme. I think parents will be drawn to the creativity the sets advertise and the apparent return to 'old skool' LEGO. And of course Minecraft-loving kids will be thrilled to receive them.
I'd say it's fairly 'juniorised' but that's not a bad thing in this case. It contains a high proportion of good old basic bricks, plates and a few slopes and as such is an excellent 'back to basics' set that doesn't rely on large specialised and otherwise useless pieces to make it easy to build. It maintains the blocky appearance of the game but with enough embellishments -- carrots, flowers, etc. -- to make it interesting. The minifigs and animals are great, although it's perhaps disappointing that the style of the animal heads make them unsuitable for use in a non-Minecraft minifig environment given we don't have a proper minifig-scale sheep as yet.
This a nice set, a perfect addition for your Minecraft collection. Those who like Minecraft will be able to have new animals and some extra ground to enlarge their Minecraft scenes. There are many common parts, very useful for many types of constructions.
The main strength of this set is how versatile it is. You can build and rebuild the farm in different ways (as you would in the game). The waterfall adds a lot of possibilities. You can turn it into a river, for example, or a water slide — or maybe something else altogether! Minecraft and LEGO are, after all, all about creative freedom. This set makes that possible.
