The detail on the Olivia mini-doll is why I love this set. The print on her leggings is space-patterned! Olivia is my favorite Friends character because of her passion for space and science, and I love that this set exhibits her passion for baking as well. It gives her a well-rounded personality and is a good example for girls who like baking/cooking and science/space. One suggestion for the Friends theme: I would like 3-in-1 sets similar to the Creator houses. I love the colors used in the Friends sets and would really enjoy 3-in-1 houses/buildings that fit the theme.
This was a great introduction to Lego for a 7-year-old's birthday. She was able to follow the instructions with just a bit of help, and she loves the set. There is plenty of room for pretend play with two characters and activities for them to do with the cafe setup including a baking area, store, and eating areas. It even includes a gear mechanism for some extra STEM extension, if she ever takes apart the cupcake store (unlikely, given how much she loves it, but maybe in a couple of years she'll get tired of it?!) then she can experiment with other uses for the gear. And... a serving robot? What a cool unexpected touch!I have to admit I was skeptical about the whole concept of "girl lego," I'm a gender-neutral purist, but you really can't argue with kids having a great time.
I'd certainly recommend this set. It was fun to build and play with. My favorite part is seeing a new twist on something that's been done before. As you can see, other baking sets have been available. Although they were nice, I'd describe them as “expected." I personally more enjoy the surprise and whimsy of Olivia's shop. I feel invited to modify it and make it even more innovative and quirky.
The set looks great, excluding the scooter, and the blend of baking and science feels cohesive and is carried throughout the set, offering up plenty of play possibilities. LEGO Friends sets have bags of charm and this is no exception, fans of all ages will no doubt delight in cooking up a storm with this one.
I was a little puzzled when I first saw that there was another cupcake café coming out. However I think with the technology twist the two sets are sufficiently different. I like this set a lot more than café from three years ago - I like the use of the sparkly stickers and I love the brick built strawberry. For the price (335 pieces, $29.99, £24.99), it offers a decent amount of play, especially with the addition of the cupcake dispensing machine and the scooter.
