I have two girls with different building styles- one free builder and one per instructions, and this was a hit for both! It's an easy short build and then the customization begins! I enjoyed watching their design process as they made their unique animal. The unicorn horn is not included and is from a different set they have. They loved all the different colors and I really liked the storage/sorting tray it comes in. As a LEGO fan/parent, it would have been nice to have a brick separater to easily take off the tiles as they modified their build. The girls said they would have liked more colors in the ear shapes. Overall, I'm glad we bought this and look forward to more LEGO Dots creations!
I'm ultimately left with three small picture holders, but nothing all that substantial, and limited play functions. Yes, you can open each box, but the compartment is too small to put anything inside.
As my first foray into the Dots theme, I enjoyed what I have built and liked getting creative with the freedom of no step-by-step instructions. I really hope LEGO continues with additional Dots products. They are a fun way to expand upon the core values of the LEGO brand, by appealing to a new audience of LEGO builders, while also capturing the attention of traditional LEGO fans.
For those who are fans of the many colourful pieces that come with DOTS sets, 41904 Picture Holders is the set for you! It has some of the best choices of colours for the tiles (including some colours unique to this set), and at its current price point (423 pieces, $14.99, 14.99€, £12.99) is the most reasonable of all the DOTS sets.
I feel like I say this every review, but I feel a bit torn. On the one side: The builds are boring. There is nothing special going on, and all just serve as a canvas for the DOTS. On the other side: The DOTS part of the sets are very nice. My kids love coming up with designs, albeit a tedious job to add the parts one by one. The goal of the theme is to spark creativity, and that it does. The theme is also met with a great response, both from adults and kids. On social media, I see many creative designs passing by. So I think LEGO hit the mark with the idea. If you want to do something else with your LEGO bricks than only building vehicles and buildings, this is a nice change of pass.
