Bought for my 8 y/o for us to build together. This is no small task as it toom probably 8 hours to build. (me fetching parts and him assembling). The transmission system on this is an amazing design. Definitely a cool part to show kids how they work. I was a little bummed that the power functions only applied to the crane and dump truck portion and not the tracks.
This was my first Technic build ever. I had a very good time building this model. The colors on this model make it look sharp when finished. I did get the power function kit as well to add some power. I mostly just wanted the parts from the kit for future builds. The model itself could have done a little more for the money tho. The box tips and the crane turns with the power kit. By hand you can steer it and tilt and raise crane. The tank type tracks work well on carpet but not on smooth floors. I don't care much about it's playable limits as I just enjoyed the building experience.
Let's start with getting the Elephant out of the room; this set lacks proper driving and steering. Does that make it a bad set?! Definitely not! It's a great set, but it lacks some playability when it comes to moving the vehicle. The crane and tipper bed do work properly, so there's still some playability left.
I found the build to be pretty interesting (more so than the 42039 Race Car), I guess because it is a bit unusual. However I must say, it's a really ugly truck :) I couldn't find any images of the type of truck this is supposed to be a model of, but I assume they are all about function over form. Searching for images of 'arctic truck with crane' gives more LEGO results than real trucks.
