This is the BEST Lego train yet. They just keep getting better and better. This model comes with an easy to operate bluetooth controller. The engine can also be linked to your iPhone or Android phone using the Lego Powered Up app. The 10 different speed levels forward and 10 reverse is also a nice enhancement with the new bluetooth models. The pictures are good, but don't be fooled. The train is actually much bigger than it seems in the pictures. See my uploaded photos of me holding the engine and another picture of the little Lego figure standing in front of the engine. This train also comes with a very cool armored car with a pallet full of money and gold bullion. A fork lift to load the money on the train. Six Lego figures are also included in the set. A train engineer, a security guard to guard the money, a forklift operator, and a burglar to steal the loot !Ya know … I think I'll buy another set !
This is a great set for kids to spend the entire Christmas Day with. The pieces are fun to build and have lots of great little details to it. Once they are built, there are so many different storylines that can be played. The crane is super fun to operate, and of course, driving the train with the remote control is even better! The robber and the money transport add extra storylines for play. The signal tower is great too, because it helps the train play. AMAZING: The train tracks WORK WITH MY OLD TRAIN TRACKS from 30+ years ago! Just mount the old and the new on a base plate. There will be a half-a-nupsy gap, but thats okay. Just use a 1x1 flat piece at the end of the old track to keep it up on the same level.
For the price of the set they really focused on money, so while you spend quite some money on the set, you also are rewarded with a lot of money related items. Some nice modern parts, a lot of familiar parts. They could have used the goldish version of the 'bars' (Piece 99563) but apparently they didn't (the piece was included in other 2018 sets though) and just used jumper and normal tiles.
I have two views on this set: one as an adult who looks critically at the train set while I can also see it as a child's toy. I like the green locomotive. It is a refreshing design and adds a new look to the modern City train network. It is also good to see a signal tower and a siding buffer stop included in the set. There are some features of this set that I didn't like. I thought that the rolling stock and vehicles were somewhat of a let-down. It seems unrealistic to use a crane car to load and discharge cargo from flatcars and wagons. The crane car would be better served as a recovery crane following a train derailment. It would need to have a safe working load at least ten times the current rating of 12 tonnes.
I do love this set. The new Powered Up components seem to be far better than their Power Functions brother. The engine is fast and has no trouble hauling the rest of the train. It also responds to the controller instantly, no-one wants lag when theres a damsel in distress on the tracks! Playability is high, yes my kids actually got bored of watching it go round in a circle but they didn't get bored of playing with the non-electric aspects of it.
