We LOVE Legos. We have a table dedicated to lego building and own a lot of sets. But when Lego came out with Hidden Side, I knew I needed to add it to my family's collection. We are huge fans of horror and all things spooky. So this was right up my alley. The Hidden Side Mystery Castle is everything I want in a set. The detail is fantastic and it's fun to put together. The height of the castle is perfect and the set is very durable. The characters are awesome and really bring this set to life. Not only do the characters bring this set to life, but the interactive app is so much fun! You can see the ghosts and play games in your Hidden Side virtual world. You become the ghost hunter or even ghosts if you play with friends. It takes the fun to a whole new level that will make you want to collect all the sets. It is the most fun I've ever had with a Lego set series. I highly recommend to anyone
The Mystery Castle will be a nice addition for anyone looking to add a reasonably priced spooky castle to their collection. It doesn't have the color splash of the Scooby Doo Mystery Mansion, but the inclusion of lots of light blue colors in the transparent pieces and stickers keeps it from becoming boring. The astronomy tower in dark tan with its curved roof and large telescope makes for a nice accent to help this castle stand out from its predecessors.
It's an interesting looking set, which doesn't really look like a castle, more of a mansion of sorts. In fact, there aren't any turrets instead there are pointed spires which use single moulded elements. One thing I do find annoying with the build was the constant need to keep turning the entire set around between build steps. One minute you're putting something on the front of the Castle and the next step has you flipping it around to add something to the back and then over to the front again. This was way more excessive than most builds. There are numerous stickers featured in the set, but they are easy enough to apply on most surfaces and do add much-needed detail. Although it lacks the play features compared to other Hidden Side sides, the additional AR functions are a fun bonus. It will certainly make a great addition to any spooky scenes this Halloween but is generic enough to also be integrated into cityscapes.
Overall I enjoyed the build experience, with a couple of minor exceptions where access was a bit limited. The finished model is quite substantial, and even without the accompanying app the Castle provides plenty of scope for ghost-hunting scenarios and play. It also offers potential for MOCing with interesting pieces if that is what attracts you to the set and its component parts.
