Fun, interesting and a great value at 859 pieces for $70US. It has no stand out characters or abundance of incredible parts to push it up over the top, but it really is well worth the money and it makes me want to get more sets AND see the movie even more then I already did.
Bought this for our just-seven year old, and he loves it. Even though it says it is for ages 8-14, if your child is used to Legos, this model will be fine. It is a bit challenging at first, but as an experienced Lego child, he coasted through the assembly. He loved the different variations he could create from the set, and the many shaped pieces allows him to create new Lego designs once he has mastered the templated ones. Great variety of pieces exist in this set.
I like when this happens - I go into a set thinking I won't like it, and then it turns out to be great! This set has a lot going for it - good-looking models, some unique minifigures with terrific prints, some good parts, and plenty of fun to be had.
Of the three models in this set, my personal favourite is the robo-mech-firetruck-thing. It definitely looks like it was built from pure firetruck parts, while still looking great. The flying farmhouse is interesting and fun to play with too. The Micro Manager makes a good bad guy to be destroyed by the two good guys, but is otherwise much the same as the other movie set ones.
Although all three models are okay and are certainly inventive, they are nothing special and it does feel as if they've just been thrown together as if they were left-overs. I don't think the three are seen in the same scene in the movie (but I could be mistaken). The minifigs represent insignificant 'extras' in the movie.
There are a ton of pieces in the set and a lot of real elements and features overall. It really just comes down to what you are interested in, and how you make the most of the set. The one flying whirl kabob made the entire set interesting for me.
Of course the three finished models all look very odd together, but hey, this is The LEGO Movie. It's a great set for kids acting out a scenario and the windmill helicopter injects some much-appreciated humour into proceedings. There's not really anything too exciting in the parts department - nothing that won't be very common very soon. Well, apart from Fabu-Fan's torso, that excited me a lot!
