Toad's Treasure Hunt

My little boy and his cousins loved this lego set! They were playing for ages and had so much fun, challenging enough to keep them quiet and occupied but not too difficult to frustrate them! Can't go wrong with lego!! more less

The 71368 Toad's Treasure Hunt expansion set costs about the same as three small expansion sets, but on the whole, the number of characters, mechanisms and scannable labels is also in proportion. The set adds quite a bit of real estate to your levels and is a great pack if you love Toad and Toadette. If you prefer to have a mix of very different challenges you may decide to go for a combination of smaller packs instead. more less

When playing this set, it really starts to feel like being in a video game at times – bopping Mario onto the levers, then bopping him onto the boxes, feels fantastic. But there is no escaping that set costs $69.99, and no matter how game-like it initially feels, the replayability is not strong enough to justify the pricetag. more less

Despite the disappointment of no Captain Toad, I do love the play features dotted about the set. I think the way the Cheep Cheeps have been used is very clever and simply done as well. Definitely the best use of enemies in a LEGO Mario set I've built so far. The two Toad characters look great, those new mushroom cap elements are a little cubic but work for the style of the theme. Despite the fairly flat nature of the Mushroom Houses, they add a bit of colour to the often limited palette used for the main sections of most sets. As a gamer since the late 80s, the grid-like maps between levels in the Mario games hold fond memories and of all the LEGO Mario sets, this one reminds me of the world overviews the most. It does seem an expensive set for what you get, but there are plenty of play features, loads of Action Bricks and some great little builds. My only complaint is the lack of Captain Toad, I do love Captain Toad. more less
