Recommendation: meh 4.8 / 5 from 6 reviews

This set is amazing. What's great is that both sides can put a real sea battle fight with the Ninja doing their best too face a goliath type beast of a ship that can detach it's sides too overwhelm the Ninja if they chose too end the battle quickly. This set as I will type, looks amazing anywhere you put it and is fun too build and play with.

Recommendation: meh by Chris Doyle

This is the most expensive set in the Island theme, and unfortunately, that price point introduces a few issues. Running $69.99 US for 780 pieces, the price-per-part is just under 9 cents, which a little on the high side for an unlicensed set. Another ding on the value is that none of the included minifigures are exclusive to this set. While there's a good range of parts, the rare and unique elements aren't ones that are likely to see a lot of use in custom creations. That said, this is still a pretty engaging set. The catamarans are both well built and full of fun details. The action features are varied and feel like they should inspire a lot of play.

The omission of any exclusive minifigures is disappointing though, especially because trailers have featured characters which are not available as physical minifigures. Furthermore, I think the price of £59.99 or $69.99 feels fairly expensive when compared with other NINJAGO sets. Ultimately, these vehicles are quite appealing but neither achieves the excellence which I was perhaps anticipating.
