We do all three current Lego advent calendars each year and this year, the Star Wars calendar is one of our favorites. It has lots vehicles and seven minifigures as well as a great Santa BB-8 on a snowboard (it's always fun to find out which character will be representing the holidays each year.) I especially like the snow-blower and the speeder with the holidays presents. The inside of the box is a fun scene that includes the surface of Jakku with a star killer base that is covered in snow and ice. There is a dark horizon of space at the top but it is fairly small in comparison to the rest of the scene. This is a great addition to the series and to the scenes that we set up each year. Star Wars is one of our favorite series in Lego and we look forward to the opening the calendar and assembling the individual prizes each day in December.
OK, so this advent calendar has been reduced to clear at many retailers, down to around the £17 mark but even so it's poor value. The actual pieces are, as many others have said, basic and lacking in originality. While I'd normally keep a few of the assembled ships etc on display, this year they are likely to only add to the spare brick collection. Given the hype of the new film out this Christmas, Lego have missed an opportunity and instead have churned out a boring, uninspired set that won't keep anyone enthralled in the run up to Christmas.
I was going to give it a three based on the upgraded builds and the fact that many of the figures are fairly unique, but they are so generic and boring (other then Sabine) that I'm only going to give it a two. And let me tell you that it EARNED that two with it's builds and if they hadn't had to carry the weight of the calendar alone, this year could have been something special. A truly unfortunately, missed opportunity. Until next year.
