My son loves this set. Wish they had a smaller add-on set that would allow him to purchase another eagle, though. That is the best part, and it's kind of sad that they give you only one for this scene (which of course in the movie included numerous birds!).

Recommendation: no 35 / 50 by ZCerberus

The minifigures are too varied and the set likely too high priced to be an army builder candidate, the set is too expensive and the rare bricks too few to be a parts pack, the play and display features are nothing to write home about, but if you are going after this set for the minifigures, you'll be pleased. From a MOCers perspective, you get some great figures that would fetch a high price on Bricklink and for the extra cash you'll get some solid, if not rare earth-tone parts to use in your MOCs. I would therefore recommend this set, but I probably wouldn't recommend buying multiples.

Looking at The Battle of Five Armies as a set, I like the structure and the ballista and I love the minifigures. I'm not sure I can recommend it at $60 though, as the value just doesn't feel like it's there with only 472 pieces - it seems so small. If you're a fan of The Hobbit, you probably want to pick this set up for Dain and the others, but you should wait for a sale if you can. Otherwise you're probably better off passing on this, unless it's at a big discount.
