The mini-builds may not be spectacular but they definitely serve their purpose as simple but well-built complementary elements to an army builder set that focuses on minifigs and accessories. When combined with multiples of this set, that is where the full potential of these builds will be realized, and that in itself speaks of how well-conceptualized and well-designed this set is.
This set is a nice little addition to the up-and-coming Lone Ranger theme. One can collect a whole bunch of these sets and create a large army, not to mention a good collection of masked men. American Civil War buffs would like the new Union torsos, and it's a great way to add to your Wild West collection.
The set is not outstanding due to simple builds, but it is for sure above average considering its design and what it has to offer. Whether you're getting the set for the white horse, the soldiers or various accessories, it's a nice addition to every LEGO collection. I got the set for the horse alone, and I found much more in it than I expected.
Unless you really want to build an army of US civil war era-style soldiers, there really isn't a reason to pick this up, especially not for $12.99. On clearance, sure, it might qualify as an ok deal and an ok way to stock up on cannons and horses, in addition to the soldiers. But this set is nothing more than ok, at best.
This is a great introduction to the Lone Ranger theme. The minifigs are, as we've come to expect lately, superb, and the rest of the set is pretty good too.
