The design and appearance is where this set shines. It is nothing short of magnificent. The colours, the printed tiles, even the stickers, it all adds up to one of the most stunning sets to come out in the past year. I love the lanterns, cobblestone and round windows at the front of the house, and the little detail of the sticker showing the upside-down fu character.
This is the most impressive 2019 set which is released so far and I had so much enjoyment building this set up. I can just pick it up and show to anyone who are able to quickly identify the key meaning of this building set. Very impressive.
Yes, I get appealing to the Chinese market by releasing sets exclusively for the market, but I think mass-producing a set as great as this and distributing globally would've honoured the Chinese even more. That said, this set is almost perfect, from a design standpoint, but also from a cultural appreciation standpoint. This little LEGO take on the most important season in Chinese culture is poignant and so well thought out, but the reality that most of you reading might not be able to own the set makes it necessary to dock off a point from the score. 80101 Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner is beautiful and thoughtful, with an amazing family of minifigures, all contained in a fun little build with tons of cultural significance.
The response to this set has been overwhelming from AFOLs all over the world. The pre-order sales in Singapore has been swift as the price point of SGD$89.90 is very palatable. I'm definitely going to get a set on January 1st and build it in time for the Lunar New Year in February!
This set is a great way to capture the holiday celebration from the point of view of a family outside LEGO's traditional market. The design is on point with plenty of excellent details and a wonderful setting, and of course, all the delicious-looking food tiles. The quantity of newly printed elements alone is sure to make many fans want this set, and it expands on the typical Euro/American-centric food offerings of most sets, allowing fans to have more diversity in their LEGO cities. As such, though, we have to address the fact that most LEGO fans outside of Asia will never have a chance to purchase this set. This is a big miss for LEGO. While there are many holidays that aren't celebrated around the world (including Christmas), New Year's is celebrated in nearly every culture.
80101 Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner is a fantastic set. I love the choice of minifigures, the detail and thoughtfulness packed throughout the set, and its representation of a heartwarming family scene. A lot of attention will be paid to all of the printed food pieces, but this set is not to be overlooked for its building techniques and terrific parts usage.
