This sensor can measure the level of ambient light, and can also measure how much light an object is reflecting using a red LED. By choosing in NXT-G (or any other environment) that the light sensor will generate light, you can also detect close objects (like the touch sensor does, but with light instead). This sensor is not quite as simple as the touch sensor, but is still very simple. It can replace the touch sensor in many situations, for example on roboarm only a light sensor is needed (it can detect close objects).
