I hope you were able to pick up this set while it was free-with-purchase, as it represents an amazing building experience. It far exceeds the stated $20 value, as is evident in the secondary market due to desirability and number of parts. With so many unique parts, a desirable minifigure and innovatively detailed buildings, this set is a must have for Harry Potter fans. Should you also be picking up #71043 Hogwarts Castle, then adding this set to your collection is a no brainer.
If you were on the fence about this set, I cannot recommend this set enough. It's a great display piece, fun to build and isn't too cost-prohibitive as its essentially free!
As a freebie, Diagon Alley is worth it for the bricks, but mostly for the Minifigure of Mr. Ollivander. If it had not been free, it still would have been a good value set. But, I would not have paid for it. I am not impressed with the look of the micro-build. I also feel it serves little purpose since it is only a display piece with no play value.
Getting a set worth $30 for free that includes unique printed parts and a unique minifigure shouldn't require too much convincing on our part. While the designs of the microscale shops aren't quite as innovative as some of the amazing entries in our recent Microscale Magic contest, they're consistent with the aesthetic of 71043 Hogwarts Castle. This leaves us hopeful that LEGO will produce more locations at this scale, like Hogsmeade Village or the Burrow.
If you're a LEGO Harry Potter fan, there's no question if you want to pick up the LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley (40289) or not. It's a pretty fun build to pass the time but the details are somewhat limited because it is in the microscale scale. That doesn't mean there aren't details with the set. For me, the best one is in front of Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes and the printed cobblestone tiles. The exclusive minifigure of Mr. Ollivander is also a bonus.
Microscale building is typically most appropriate for enormous structures that would be impossible to construct at a realistic minifigure scale, such as 76042 The SHIELD Helicarrier and 71043 Hogwarts Castle. 40289 Diagon Alley does not necessarily meet those criteria but looks brilliant in my opinion. The colourful shops are attractive when combined in a single street and smaller details are instantly recognisable too.
