People are complaining the date set for the past is wrong. The brick says 1958. In the movie they travel to 1955. This is not a mistake, but a inside joke for Lego. 1958 was the year the first Lego brick was produced.
Despite some of the “issues" of the set, the LEGO designer did a pretty good job in capturing what Team BTTF had in mind in their CUUSOO project. There are some nice techniques used to make the DeLorean pop out such as the exhaust vents/propulsion system and the front and back bumpers. All the printed pieces were a great addition although there is the spelling error on the flux capacitor. The minifigures in the set were spot on with their outfits. The DeLorean makes a great display piece or a for to play with.
I'm delighted with this set, and if you're a fan of the films, you will be too. I urge you to look beyond the stepped front end; if you can't, well, maybe you guys just aren't ready for this yet. But your kids are gonna love it.
A reasonable model, but one that, aesthetically, could have been so much better.
In conclusion, I think that with all the special parts plus the really cool box, 21103 is a set that's still worth buying. And you can still get one, albeit only on after-market platforms. Despite all its flaws the set sold out at Lego.com in a very short time.
I've written the word “buy" quite a lot in the previous two paragraphs. But that doesn't change the fact that this set could have been much, much better. Changes to the hood and roof design are both baffling, and severely detract from the “shelf appeal" of the set, without really adding anything in terms of sturdiness or playability (normal compromises I'd expect). Overall, yes, I can recommend this set with a clear conscience. But you deserve to know exactly what you're getting. And what you're getting isn't perfect.
Overall, a disappointing set and not really worth picking up unless you're a speculator, have a thing for licensed themes, or are building your own DeLorean and want the printed elements and minifigs to complete your model. No one thought this set would become a reality, and just the experience of building the time traveling DeLorean from one of the best 80's science fiction movie franchises was pretty satisfying and nostalgic. It's just too bad the final model sucks.
