This is a great set. It stands out against my collection of LEGO. If you have a deep LEGO collection, I think this would be a must have. If you are simply a fan of themes and mini-figs, it might not be to your tastes at all. One thing I can say though: if you are an AFOL wanting to get a non-AFOL, non-geek fan, a set, this might just be the one. It's charming.
Giving this set anything other than a 5 out of 5 would be selling it short. LEGO Birds continues the incredible run of LEGO Ideas sets and is another feather in the cap of a consistently remarkable theme. Bring on the next Ideas set, I say!
This set is really impressive. Is it a scientific model? A toy? Art? What it is is a fantastic display model and gets people thinking about what else can be built with LEGO. It'd be great to get a sequel and delve into some of Tom's other birds. There are so many to choose from! Either way, LEGO really stepped it up with this one. If you don't have this set, get it. You won't be let down.
i rediscovered my love of Legos a little over a year ago when I bought an architecture set (Imperial Hotel). When I saw this set pop up on Amazon, I didn't think twice about buying. These birds are enchanting- that someone was able to design these winged creatures out of square blocks is amazing. They kind of make me think about Charley Harpers illustrations of birds. They display beautifully- I know guests will be mesmerized by them.
These finished constructions are spectacular. Each makes for unique home decor and a rich conversation piece. This is a great building kit for kids of all ages and especially for bird lovers. The sets work on focus and concentration.
Overall, all three birds are unique and have their appeal. Personally I'm more fond of the Robin and the Blue Jay rather than the Hummingbird however, the coloring of all three builds are very vibrant. What's nice about the builds are that they each come with their own bases and stands which allows them to be displayed.
From the moment you see the box to when you finally arrange your completed species on a shelf, I found this set an absolute joy. Despite being basic plates, the models are extremely accurate but more than that, it's the creative spark of personality that Tom brings to every bird which really sets them apart. Compared to the animals you get in the Creator line, these creations are several steps higher in terms of being exquisite and complex geometrical builds - more akin to a Chinese puzzle. In fact if I had to compare them to another LEGO theme it would be Architecture... luxury box and instructions, classy display presentation, advanced techniques and an inventory consisting mostly of basic parts. For adults who've not built a LEGO set in decades, this prevalence of simple plates should make them comfortable that this brand is indeed not "full of specialised parts you can only use for one thing", whilst the specialised parts that have been included should open their eyes to how LEGO has advanced over the years, along with the advanced techniques.
This is purely a set for display, and it fulfills that role brilliantly. I have no complaints regarding the appearance of the Robin or the Blue Jay, and even the Hummingbird features a good level of detail. The value for money is certainly there as although the models are quite small, all three are densely packed with pieces. My only significant criticism would be for the Hummingbird, which looks a little bit strange beside the other, much larger birds included. The flower is a nice addition but I still do not think it quite matches the excellence of the Robin and Blue Jay, leaving me slightly disappointed with it.
All in all this is a great set. The price per piece is excellent and with three discrete models it delivers above its price point. If you are interested at all, take the plunge and get one while you can (they might be limited in release), you won't be disappointed.
In the end you get two awesome bird models and one mediocre one. The Robin and the Blue Jay aren't absolutely perfect, but they're fairly close to perfection with their awesome designs that are filled with a bunch of cool techniques and a lot of attention to the details of the actual birds. The Hummingbird isn't quite as glorious, but it's still a fun little model when coupled with the flower. It should be noted that these are sculptures, and as such have little play value. The birds don't have moveable wings or necks and are not very swooshable at all. These are sculptures that are better suited as display pieces, and as such are likely aimed at an older audience.
