It's a cute addition to my collection, but unless you're determined to collect all 12 Zodiac Animals, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a must-buy.
The Year of the Ox (40417) is the seventh one in the Chinese New Year series and it's an okay build. Ranking it alongside the other animals that have released so far in terms of design, I would place it fifth. Of course, that's just my opinion and you may have it ranked higher. The Year of the Dog (40235) is still my favorite one mainly because I love the look of it and that is my zodiac animal.
Oxen are not the most glamorous or attractive animals but designer Mel Caddick has done a decent job of making this an appealing model. It's not my favourite by any means, but as I said at the start, if you have a collection of the zodiac animals, you'll want to add this one to it.
It's a fun little build with relevance for an increasing number of LEGO fans. Don't be surprised to see its collectability rise in years to come.
The actual set is a simple enough build. It features various points of articulation including the feet, arms, ears and head. The Ox then sits upon a simple display base, which features the traditional gold and red colours associated with Chinese New Year. I like that even after all these years the design has stayed very uniform. It makes the ‘Year of' builds a unique collection of sets. It's a nice set to gift for Lunar New Year or simply collect if you don't celebrate the event.
