This set, with only 203 pieces accomplishes The LEGO Group's Mission Statement “Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow" in more ways than one, and as a dad, I found being able to tell her the story of Amelia Earhart, and most importantly that women can do anything that men can do a particularly poignant experience that was enabled by this collection of bricks.
If you like display sets and planes are your thing, this is a great set to honour one of the aviation pioneers. Moreover, if you are interested in the start of this line dedicated to relevant historical figures, you would not want to miss it!
Overall, stand notwithstanding (!), this is an excellent and substantial gift with purchase that will rightfully tempt many of you to part with more money on the 6th March. Don't hang about though, LEGO does not have a good track record when it comes to availability of GWPs at the moment!
Where some gifts-with-purchase at LEGO.com and in LEGO stores can feel lightweight for the qualifying spend amounts, or in subject matter may only appeal to a select number of collectors or LEGO fans, 40450 Amelia Earhart Tribute is a well-realised promotional LEGO set, able to stand as its own model in credibility, collectability and wider audience interest, with historical and educational relevance. If there's one gift-with-purchase to be ready to pick up when available, and hope that the LEGO Group carries decent stock levels of, it's this one.
Overall, I'm really surprised with the robustness of the build. I really like the way that the wheel cowlings are positioned on the plane and the novel use of the canoe paddle as the propeller
It took about 30 mins to build and was fun, with some nice techniques. If, like me, you're looking for interesting ways to teach your kids about the power of self-belief then this set is a must. If you're a fan of planes, this is a must. If you're just wanting a bunch of red and black parts this set is probably not a must but it'll do just fine.
So, would I recommend you spend a cool hundred of your hard-earned currency to get this set? Heck, no! If you're buying something else anyway, this is a nice little sweetener. I dread to think what the after-sales value is going to be on the minifigure though, because like her real life counterpart, LEGO Amelia is a pretty high flyer!
The LEGO Amelia Earhart Tribute (40450) promotion set will be released just in time to celebrate International Women's Day 2021. Again, the promo will start on March 6 and you can get it with purchases of $100 or more. Unless LEGO produced a substantial amount to last them a whole week, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll probably sell out before then.
As I've mentioned on previous gift-with-purchase sets, it's hard not to recommend a set that's free if you're already buying something else. But should this set persuade you to buy $100 worth of LEGO that you might have otherwise waited on? In this case, yes, absolutely. This is a phenomenally cool set if you have any interest in aviation or history. It would make a wonderful display model, even in a professional office.
