It's a quick build and a robust vehicle, but the steering design needs mechanical improvement. In addition I had to recalibrate steering several times. App-based control is ok, but without physical levers, you spend a lot of time looking at your phone to keep your fingers in the right position, rather than looking where you're driving. You're paying more for new tech than for playability.
Great model, fun build. The minor problem is with the round studs the front drive rods attach to. The right side stud pops out when turning. Easy fix by superglue. First Lego I have ever used glue on. I tried to bend the bottom of the stud slightly to get a tighter fit. It worked a wile, then piped out. Very minor problem. I did not have any other studs to use. Really like th engine torque. App works great. I love the design of the battery box. Easy to replace batteries.
The vehicle looks awesome: big, brash, and brutish. I'm not sure that it's particularly realistic but it looks cool, and that's probably all that matters.
The truck itself looks fantastic, with the open space under the hood being the biggest downside. A fake motor, preferably functioning, would have been a welcome addition. Thanks to the use of two big turntable and spring-based suspension the crawler is very versatile and can easily conquer rough terrain and small obstacles. Its biggest let down is the steeping price.
Although the status of Powered Up elements is yet unclear (the Control+ app is locked to the model and can't be used in custom creations at the moment), the model offers a lot of value for its price: enjoyable assembling experience, fresh design and tons of playability including in-app challenges and free driving using one-touch control. Once again, LEGO prepared not just a toy or a set of plastic pieces, but rather a very impressing experience from the second you open the box till the moment you have to take a break to replace the batteries; this is a smart toy that is very hard to stop playing with.
