I recently started collecting Lego sets with my son - whether you keep them in the box to display or build the set, they are terrific collectible items. What I Like:The "Hidden Side" series combines the challenge of building a Lego set (this Lighthouse of Darkness set has over 500 pieces!) with augmented reality play (via a free smart device app) once the set is completed. Really a cool concept! I like that Lego is looking into and developing technologies to keep today's children engaged - from Technic to City to Friends to Hidden Side, there really is a Lego set for kids of any age!The set includes the Lighthouse, a wave runner and four mini-figures with a few accessories. What I Would Change:I have a few of the "Hidden Side" sets and this is not our favorite - The Newbury Haunted High School set that we bought last year was a much more impressive set and completed model (and to be fair cost nearly twice as much)Still a great set - recommend!
This was such a fun build and the time just flew by as I was building. There are so many tiny little touches included in the build and hidden features that it makes it really interesting to construct. My particular favorite is the hidden crab under the dock and the disappearing bat. Nicely sized structure when completed and it looks great on the display shelf. If you are building for play this has a load of functionality and is actually quite impressive. I have no idea what the interaction with the app is liek as I haven't downloaded it, I'm happy enough with the set as it is without going down the augmented reality route. Comes with perhaps my favourite mini figure - the Lego Skeleton, I just love those guys. You also have the option to make a couple of the characters possessed and, as I am doing the build, they definitely got the spooky treatment. 70431 The Lighthouse of Darkness works well as a lighthouse set, albeit with a focus on the lighthouse's setting as well as the structure itself. It could even fit into a City layout. The transformation is fine but not great, so it is probably not worth purchasing just for the function. While not the best of the bunch, it is another worthy entry into the LEGO Hidden Side theme.
The Lighthouse of Darkness is another interesting Hidden Side set. I love how the rocky jetty and dock area has been done. The BURP and other elements perfectly combine to create a rugged looking base from the Lighthouse. Although the actual Lighthouse is a little cramped, it kind of needs to be in order to incorporate the gloomed elements, which I would say offers more playability than a larger interior would.
