This figure is very reminiscent of the Rahi Beasts from 2001. It has a nice complicated build, however the function lacks the coolness factor of its 2001 counterparts. The nicest thing it has is the Gold Skull Spider Mask, and its face print. It is a good set for completionists, but maybe not the best for causual BIONICLE fans. Unfortunately the box my copy of the figure came in was in rather poor condition. I would take a picture, but I got rid of the box years ago.
For LEGO Bionicle fans, this figure helps to bring the battle of good (the Protectors) versus evil (the Skull Spiders) to life. Kids will especially love acting out this spider's death-lock attack with its easy-to-operate grip-and-crush function. We just wish it came with at least one smaller Skull Spider like the other sets to further the roleplay.
The first thing I should mention about this set is that it is huge. By huge I mean the it-fits-on-a-large-size-baseplate kind of huge. In fact, you may even want to make space for this model in advance before you put it together. Something else I want to mention is that fans of printed pieces will be excited to know that there is ONE printed piece in this set; the spider's face. Out of the 2015 BIONICLE sets I've bought so far, the only set that I've had to apply decals to is Onua. Not only is this set stable quality-wise, but the play function of this set is also pretty cool. Which brings me to my next point; the play feature uses a LEGO Technic elastic band to operate the play feature. The downside to this is that THERE IS NO SPARE INCLUDED. I don't think it will break on its own during play, but if it gets lost during construction, or something else happens to it, you're basically out of luck unless you order a new one. Finally, you get a Skull Spider mask cast in pearl-gold which is a nice inclusion for the set. However, the only thing I dislike about it is that you don't get any leg pieces to make it into a Skull Spider. Overall, I recommend it to any BIONICLE fans out there (including the ones who have a fear of spiders).
He's not great, let's get that out of the way. When you judge this set, you can't hold him to the same level as the other 12 sets in the wave. He's a very Technic oriented build, which is good fun to construct, but not so fun to pose or look at. He doesn't have a slew of new parts, but what parts he does have are decent for the more Technic savvy builders. Would I recommend him? As a build or parts pack, yes. But as a set, I don't like him.
From the initial pictures, I was hopeful for this set and excited when I got my hands on it. Maybe my expectations were too high, because I was not overly impressed with it. For your $15, you're probably better off picking up one of the smaller Toa. Unless you're a completist or really want that gold skull spider mask, you can probably skip this set.
Look, there are some flaws, but as far as villain sets go, it's all we have at the moment. It's looking like there are more interesting villains coming in the second half of the year, but if you can't wait until then, I'd say go for this one. Aesthetically, it's a great set. He looks like a Lord of Skull Spiders. It's got a complex gear system for you builders out there and a golden mask for you collectors out there. Set of the year? No. But if you're looking for an affordable villain, I'd say Lego has delivered.
I only recommend this set because of it's features, which are not found in any other set. If those interest you, you'll love it. Otherwise, you won't miss it.
