This set is meant for The Hobbits fans out there! Especially if you've been to New Zealand which I haven't. The realistic design of the house with the arch round pieces and the large round door was astounding. And four dwarves down, nine more to go!

An Unexpected Gathering is, without a doubt, one of my favorite sets that I've purchased and built this year.

I really don't know how lego does it. All of their Hobbit set are top-of-the-line quality, and this one is no exception. This set is Shire through and through. Lego manages the pack and cram Bag End into this smaller than scale smial (hobbit-hole). The inside includes a small fireplace that can be enhanced using extra pieces, garden, a table with seating for all included minifigures, the famous Red Book and quill, broom and other special touches. The set is very well built structurally , even though the roof comes off. Some special exterior touches include circular windows, circular green door that even has Gandalf's special mark, a dwarven 'g', and a tree growing on top. This set captures both the Shire and Bag End in one fell swoop.

So what's not to like? Excellent sturdy design, satisfying build, great parts selection, highly playable and superb minifigs. The finished model looks idyllic, just as you imagine life in The Shire to be. Even the price (£60, US$70) is pretty good.

At any price, this is an absolute must-have set for every LEGO Castle and Middle Earth enthusiast. These days, isn't that pretty much everybody?

The set itself looks great, but has a whole lot of utility both for display and for parts. You're not going to find a better collection of green (or dwarf torsos) available, and if you want to build a market or the like, there's a lot of food accessories in the set. It's not a cheap set, but it never feels like it's not delivering on that price.
