Very fun small set. This was a lego promo that I missed getting at the Lego Store but Amazon as usual came through for me. This is a very quick, small, and simple build but completes my Pirates collection for this latest group of Pirate themed Lego sets.

It is hard to beat a free set. The high score awarded is largely because of that. As a purchase, I might have rated it lower. After all, this set remained unopened in my collection for five years. It was an amusing little build, and a great inclusion for Pirate Week.

It isn't as cool as the Space one from last year but I guess that justifies the lower purchase price to get it. Hopefully LEGO continues to do these classic promo sets in the future with other themes.

As an attempt to recapture the magic of the original Pirates theme from 1989 this set fails, predominantly as a result of the almost exclusively modern parts and building techniques used. By my count, only nine of the pieces in the set were available in 1989, including the head, torso and legs of the minifigure! However, for a free promotional item it offers a huge amount of play value and feels like a high quality product. The packaging is excellent and I like the small booklet included very much, but the highlight is actually the set itself which is reasonably substantial considering that this is a gift with purchase (GWP). This is an excellent addition to any Pirates collection and I absolutely recommend it to all fans of the theme.
